Nothing but Spearfishing lately for me. A buddy of mine did go out to battledore reef the other day and catch a limit of huge trout. It also seems like there's Mangrove Snapper everywhere right now including lake Pontchartrain.

Ed and I launched out of Breton Sound Marina yesterday with the intent of fishing Breton Sound and possibly the chandaleur islands in search of big fish. We weren't after trout, since I have a freezer full of trout filets, and Ed specializes in fishing heavy tackle for the largest fish species in whatever area he's in.

We got out at daybreak, and it was a little too rough for my little boat to make it out to the islands, so we stayed on the fringes of Breton Sound for a while. We caught the huge stingray around 8am near Point Chicot. The thing was massive; too big for my 50lb. scale. It ran like nutz, almost spooling my Calcutta 700 with 30lb. test. We finally gaffed it and pulled it aboard for the photo op.

Around 10am the tide stopped going the opposite way of the wind, laying down seas just enough for us to get out safely; so we hit the Pogo rig in Bay Eloi where we immediately started hooking up with monster redfish. We stayed out a few more hours and caught probably 6 bull reds and a small shark.

This from LSU; a pictorial report on the state of our barrier islands (the Chandaleur Island chain), pre and post hurricane Katrina. Gosier Island is completely gone. I just fished there last year. Curlew was washed away by Ivan. It's gone. Main Chandaleur is broken up badly with large sections completely gone. Breton Island is much smaller - probably next on the list if a major storm heads this way.

Like I don't have enough websites already. I decided it would be better to keep my spearfishing reports separate from my fishing reposrts.

This is a cool swordfish video. I don't know the whole story behind it, but it looks like some kind of video related to offshore drilling work. The camera is going down a support beam and this huge swordfish swims by.

Nate and I caught about 80 speckled trout yesterday, tons of throwbacks. We kept 42, but the keepers were decent, a few probably went 3 pounds. Most were caught in bayous around Lake Amadee and Lake Robin in Hopedale. A few in the twin pipelines.

The plan was originally to go spearfishing in Lake Pontchartrain today. I bought my first wetsuit yesterday, and I was ready to take the plunge, remembering stories of big striped bass that spawn around the Causeway at this time of year. But it was too late. I couldn't get anyone to go with me; it was too last minute. Not to mention that the Lake is around 60 degrees at best right now, so even my buddies that spearfish with me probably wouldn't go.

I think I started fishing when I was 1yr. old. I can remember back to the age of 4 - going fishing with my mom and grandfather. They used to have a camp out in Montegut, just South of Houma, LA. I still think to this day, that's why I love being in the LA marshes so much. I still try to take mom fishing with me on occasion, and we usually end up going around once a year.

Mom came over for New Years eve, and I asked her to go fishing with me. I was planning on doing some rod and reel fishing around the causeway, and maybe spearing for a little while if the conditions were right since I had her with me. But when I woke up this morning the wind was bad - forecasts of 15mph out of the SE. That would be bad for fishing the northshore. So I switched plans to the sure-bet Hopedale marsh. The marsh fishing is incredible right now. The wind would keep the gnats away. And the other good thing would be that I'd surely put mom on some fish. I think the last few times she's been with me, we didn't do that great.

So we headed out late - launched at Breton Sound Marina around 10 am, and by noon we had 30 nice trout 14-18" fish. Only two throwbacks. Mom was a little rusty, as evidenced by not paying attention to her cork and missing like 20 fish. I really didn't feel like cleaning 50 fish like I did the last trip; that's why we quit at 30. It was a nice day, mild temps, morning fog lifted when we got out there, and the sun peaked out for a little while.

NOAA's website has some really incredible resources on it for fishing / diving; here's some bookmarks I've collected over the past few years. This is the stuff I use to plan my trips.

The National Data Buoy Center has live buoy data such as wave height, water temperature, and wind speed live from all over the world. The Louisiana Gulf Coast page is here:
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/Maps/WestGulf_inset.shtml
It was incredible, when hurricane Katrina was going through LA, one of the buoys outside of the Chandaleur Islands was showing 60ft wave heights! I'm sure the waves got bigger than that in places, but most of the buoys stopped transmitting data by that point.

Sea Surface Temperatures: This is good stuff for divers. Here you can get an idea of what the water temp is going to be like. Keep in mind this is the surface temperature, and I'm not sure how deep it averages out for. Thermoclines can vary dramatically. Here's the link to Gulf of Mexico SST data that I use:
http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/PSB/EPS/SST/data/gulfmex.cf.gif

NOAA Dive Page: NOAA is a wealth of information on diving and marine research. The dive page has links to weather and tidal reports, as well as the buoy reports and much more.

NOAA's Electronic Charts: Need maps? Here they are. Free, courtesy of US Government and your tax dollars. You can download these nautical charts with extensive detail. It's a little complicated because you also need to download an ENC viewer program to view them. I tried the first one out on this page (there's a few ENC viewers here):
http://nauticalcharts.noaa.gov/mcd/enc/resource.htm

There's also an extensive wreck database, that I haven't really gotten into yet. http://chartmaker.ncd.noaa.gov/hsd/hsd-3.html

Also of interest:

Terrafin Website: If you're a real die-hard you can pay the $100 / yr. for Terrafin's data, they have more detailed SST data and better organized imagery than the NOAA site. It also has Chlorophyll data from satellites which can be used to predict water clarity (it's not the only factor determining visibility, but does play a significant role).

Nice trout in Hopedale, Louisiana today. Nate Gorbach and I launched out of Breton Sound Marina and found trout at our first stop in one of the bayous near Hopedale Lagoon. Some were really nice sized fish too. Anything under 14" we threw back and the biggest of the day was 3.5 lbs. One more stop around Lake Amadee, and we finished off our 50 fish limit of Speckled Trout with a few redfish as well. Considering the fact that we launched at 8:30 and got back at 11:30; I would say the fishing is ON FIRE right now in Southeast Louisiana.

This is Delacroix, Louisiana. One of the most beautiful places on Earth. Louisiana coastal wetlands. Who would have thought that 2 months ago, the eye of hurricane Katrina had passed over this area? It's amazing that there's anything left.

11/14/2005 New Orleans Fishing

Fished Delacroix with Capt. Vann today and we caught fish at almost every stop. All fish were caught on artificial baits - mostly tightlined jigs with chartreuse soft plastics. Fished deep canals and caught most on the bottom up until close to sunset.

About an hour before sunset, the trout started blowing up on the surface chasing shrimp, and we finished of our limit with topwater baits. What a show. They really were veracious fish.

All speckled trout, 12 - 18 inches, with a few throwbacks. Typical winter fish. Even a few white trout in the mix.

9/20/2005 Texas Bass Fishing

Well there's one sure way of curing the evacuation blues... tour the top bass fishing lakes in Texas while you're there.

I picked up my boat last week to discover that I'd left the plug in and it filled with water like a bathtub during the storm (and I ALWAYS take the plug out). All 3 batteries were ruined, as well as most of the wiring going to them. So I spent a few days redoing everything courtesy of Bass Pro Shops to the tune $400. (Hopefully my homeowner's insurance will cover it) Then sweatpea and I were off!

First stop - Lake Sam Rayburn. I spent three days fishing Sam Rayburn with mixed luck. I think my best days I had seven fish, but they were all small 1-2 lbs. a few times, I left small fish to find bigger ones, but no luck. Overall, I had a great time. It was a beautiful lake, and very easy to fish. If I knew more about it, I'm sure I could have done a lot better.

Second stop - Lake Fork. Left Dallas around noon yesterday to fish the infamous Lake Fork until sunset. Awesome lake. Lots of variation in depth, flooded timber, jurassic park looking lilly pads, grass on shorelines, everything bass love. Where were they though? I think I caught 5 or 6 peewee fish. It was a good experience though. You just can't expect to be an out of practice amateur and go slam 'em the first time out on one of these Texas lakes. It's nothing like South Louisiana where the water doesn't get deeper than 8 feet.

Took my new father in law, David Jacobs, to Hopedale, Louisiana and launched with the friendly crew at Pip's. Gary, Dianne, Debbie, and David are always in a good mood it seems, and happy to have your business.

We started out by the wreck in Black Bay and hit a few other platforms before heading back in. We didn't have much time (fished for 3 hours); so I tried to make the most out of it. We used live croakers on the bottom and had nothing to show for it when we headed back in through Lake Fortuna. Caught one trout and lost another at an island in Fortuna, then headed in. Here's the result:

Headed out of Pip's in Hopedale yesterday morning. The weather was ideal though the heavy fog made it a little slow getting out to Black Bay in the morning. First stop was at Mozambique Point at sunrise. Nothing, no bait in the water either. Second stop at Stone Island and my topwater bait got slammed by this nice trout on the first cast:

Topwater Speckled Trout

Kept fishing until 9am to catch about 15 more and have my line snapped while trying to horse in a big redfish. These trout were BIG. A courteous boater stopped about 100 yards away so as not to scare of the fish I was catching, and I waved him over to join in after they sat for a while not catching anything.

He said, "I didn't want to motor too close and mess you up." I wish more boaters were that courteous. We both ended up catching about 15 of these mules before the bite turned off. Good day.

I headed back to the launch at 9:30, and it would have been perfect had I not had engine trouble on the way back. Got in at 11:20.

4/20/2005 New Orleans Fishing Report

As one can easily see...my last report was on Jan. 11th. this goes to show how difficult my life has been this semester. Not any more though! I'm finishing school and making time for fishing again!

Monday I launched at Pip's and headed out of hopedale for an evening trip. The weather was great for a redfish trip. Partly cloudy, a little breezy around mid day. The water was a little murky too. I stayed in the ponds around lake Robin and Couquille, but was a little rusty. I only landed one redfish. Lost another, and later spooked a whole school while trolling down the bank.

Grand Isle Fishing Report
Left New Orleans around 10am to fish the evening in Grand Isle after hearing reports of Cobia teaming around the close-in rigs. I'd been monitoring the wind on weather.com for the past two days, and was getting a little skeptical of the conditions last night because it looked like the wind wasn't going to be as calm as it was Monday. I figured me and Ed could get a work out on some bull red fish at least though.

Nada. Not a single bite. So much for the Grand Isle "January experiment." It was too windy to fish in the gulf, and we didn't happen across any reds in the passes. We tried Barataria and Caminada Passes to no avail.

Well it turned out windy. We got out around 12:30pm and everyone we talked to said that was exactly when the wind in Hopedale picked up. Started off around Lake Amadee in hopedale, then moved towards Four Horse when that didn't produce. It was tough - we struggled only picking up a few in every spot until we finally got back to the Hopedale side with the intention of looking for redfish. Fished around Lake Robin and found about 15 - 20 Trout and a few reds ending the day off well. We fished until the sun went down. Pretty afternoon.

Here's Mitchell's red fish.

New Orleans Fishing Forecast
This week looks good. Easterly winds should be pushing clean water into the marsh east side of the river. Temp's are going to be fair with fog in the morning. I've been hearing great fishing reports from friends too. This is fishing weather I like! Hope to get out Tuesday or Wednesday.

Hopedale Fishing Report!
It was painful; all weekend long I knew today would probably be one of the best days to fish this month, but I also knew I had to work. So this morning I showed up on time, dressed to kill, and there was like - nothing to do - can I go home? Please? Yes? Thank you sooo much.

I headed out to Hopedale after doing some minor maintenance to my budget bass boat, launched at Pip's around 1:30pm, and 5 minutes later I was catching gator sized Speckled Trout. I filled up the ice chest on my first stop, and headed back. I was back on my way home by 4:30. What a trip! Here's the results:

Am I glad I'm not fishing today...

It's not very often that I feel this way, but the weather sucks! And I don't want any part of it.

It's about 50 degrees outside, overcast, and rainy.

I've actually been catching a few trout here and there for a change the past few weeks, but only because I stopped being hard-headed and listened to where a few people told me to go.

I took this character the other day: christhecraig : he's a friend from Chicago that goes to school here in New Orleans. 1st time fishing!

Morning Meditation
Fishing is the Most Important Thing in My Life. The most important decision I ever made was my decision to become a fisherman. I am convinced that my whole life depends on fishing. Nothing in the world is as important to me as fishing. Everything I have, my whole life, depends on that one thing. Can I afford to forget this, even for one minute?
